Eigenbrode’s Experiment Added to 2011 Mars Rover

A former Geophysical Laboratory Fellow and current scientist at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, Jennifer Eigenbrode, has made a compelling breakthrough on how to identify large carbon molecules in the soil and trace evidence for life in extreme environments.

As a result, she is now co-investigator on the sample analysis experiment that will fly on the next NASA Mars Rover in 2011, it was announced last week.

Jennifer’s experiment has been added to the Sample Analysis at Mars (SAM) instrument on a mobile NASA laboratory that will land on Mars in 2012. Her test will enhance SAM’s ability to analyze large carbon molecules in the soil on Mars and examine the adaptability of life in hostile environments similar to those found on Earth.
