I am a biologist at the Carnegie Institution of Washington and project scientist for the Lab-on-a-Chip Application Development Portable Test System (LOCAD-PTS).

LOCAD-PTS is a hand-held instrument that will allow astronauts to conduct chemical and biological research while in space, without depending on the ground to do the analysis.  It awaits launch aboard Space Shuttle Discovery (STS-116) in December 2006. Discovery will deliver LOCAD-PTS to the International Space Station, where it will remain onboard to enable crews to monitor microorganisms onboard.
